About Us
The Legacy of Kannada Koota Montreal
Since its establishment in 1980, Kannada Koota Montreal (KKM) has been a beacon of cultural preservation and community building for the Kannada-speaking diaspora in Montreal and beyond. What began as a small gathering of individuals passionate about their roots has blossomed into a thriving organization that not only serves the Kannada community but also bridges cultural gaps within the broader Indian and Canadian society.
KKM has had the privilege of hosting some of Karnataka’s most revered personalities in the arts and literature, including legendary actors like Dr. Rajkumar, Bharathi, and Girish Karnad, and renowned singers such as Manjula Gururaj and Puttur Narasimha Nayak. These events have left an indelible mark on the community, creating memories that resonate with the pride and joy of Kannada heritage.
Through a collaborative spirit, KKM has joined forces with the Bharatiya Sangeeth Sangam of Montreal, bringing forth unforgettable musical performances by maestros like Doraiswamy Iyengar and M.S. Sheela. These concerts have not only showcased the richness of Kannada culture but have also underscored the unifying power of music in transcending cultural boundaries.
A Rich History of Cultural Contributions
Nurturing the Next Generation
Recognizing the importance of language in preserving cultural identity, KKM took a significant step in December 2018 by launching the Kannada Kali School. This initiative aims to teach the Kannada language to children, ensuring that future generations remain connected to their linguistic roots. The program’s success led to its integration with the Kannada Academy, which was started by Shive Gowder in California in 2021, further strengthening the community’s commitment to cultural education.
With a membership of over 400 Karnataka families in Montreal and its surrounding areas, KKM has become a vibrant hub for cultural exchange and social interaction. The organization is proud of its diverse audience, which includes members from various Indian communities, such as Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi-speaking groups. KKM’s events are celebrated by all, making it a cornerstone of Indian culture in Montreal.
A Strong Community Presence
Engagement with Indian Diplomacy
KKM’s active participation in events organized by the High Commission of India in Ottawa underscores its dedication to fostering strong ties between the Indian community and diplomatic representatives. The organization’s close collaboration with the High Commission is a testament to its commitment to supporting India’s cultural and diplomatic initiatives in Canada.
Every year, KKM’s calendar is filled with vibrant cultural events that bring the community together. From the joyous celebrations of Sankranti and Ugadi to the festive gatherings for Ganesh Utsav and Deepavali, KKM ensures that the spirit of Karnataka is alive and thriving in Montreal. Special events like Mother’s Day and talent showcases for women and children add a personal touch, celebrating the diverse talents within the community.
